Awakened Gomu Gomu no Mi, also known as Gear 5 (“Gear Fifth”), fortifies the user’s rubbery body.
It also allows users to manipulate and transform their environment, similar to a Paramecia awakening. During the decisive encounter with Kaidou on Onigashima, Luffy developed this skill.
Note:
The Gomu Gomu no Mi is a type of Devil Fruit called a Paramecia. It gives the user’s body the qualities of rubber, turning them into a Rubber Human (Gomu Ningen).
The World Government gave the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, a new name and category to hide the fact. It is a Mythical Zoan-type fruit that lets a person turn into the mythical “Sun God” Nika and take on his traits.
Only Imu and the Five Elders know the fruit, which has never been written down anywhere.
The World Government had been looking for the fruit for over 800 years until Shanks and his crew stole it about 13 years ago.
Shortly after, it was accidentally eaten by the series’ protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy.

Gear 5’s concept took inspiration from rubber hose animation and various cartoon effects. In particular, Oda drew inspiration from the cartoon Tom and Jerry. Oda wanted to draw something funny and also wanted Luffy’s fights to have some funny parts again, even though he knew that most One Piece fans wouldn’t like this idea because most action scenes in current Shonen manga are taken too seriously, which has made the genre lose some of what made it special in the past.
Oda wanted to contrast Luffy’s silly humor and Kaidou’s deadly gravity when he added Gear 5.
When the Gomu Gomu no Mi, which used to be called the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, is awakened. It gives the person a rubbery body with more strength and freedom, so they can fight however they want.
Because of this, the person who eats this fruit is said to become a “Warrior of Liberation” (Kaih no Senshi), bringing happiness and freedom to those around them. The power of this fruit is called “the ridiculous power in the world” (Sekai de mottomo fuzaketa nryoku).
When Luffy is in this state, his heartbeat has a sound that Zunesha calls the “Drums of Liberation” (Kaih no Doramu).
His hair and clothes turn white, just like the clouds of steam that follow him in Gear 4, except for his signature straw hat, belt, and shoes.
His eyes glow with red pupils like rings, and white clouds float around his neck.
His eyebrows also become swirled and billowing. Gear 5 also changes Luffy’s clothes so that he wears his usual pants and shoes instead of whatever else he is wearing. When Gear 5 is turned off, Luffy’s old clothes come back.
Gear 5 Luffy’s form is the pinnacle of his devil fruit skills. It lets him do anything he can think of, like a god. For example, he can make lifeless things move, make things out of nothing, and break the rules of physics.
He can do almost anything, from changing lighting properties to wielding it as a weapon. To surpass the limits of his rubber body by growing to the size of a giant. Awakening the Zoan properties allows Luffy to become his free self, but it has some drawbacks.
With great power comes great consequences and drawbacks. Awakened devil fruit skills take time to master fully. They can still be used if they have yet to be fully mastered, but they are very hard on the person who uses them.
Each of Luffy’s forms has limitations and drawbacks. For example, when Luffy uses Gear 2, he is doping his blood to make it stronger and faster. But this tends to make him tired and shorten his life over time.
Despite the amazing power Gear 5 Luffy has, it may be the most detrimental to his health. Gear 5 takes a lot of energy to use and keep up. Luffy only used this briefly, but it was enough to drain his energy and make him look older because he was so tired.
Here are a few of the more well-known Gear 5 techniques that Luffy has learned:
● Gomu Gomu no Gigant (Gum-Gum Giant): Luffy may transform into a gigantic size with this method.
● With the help of his Gomu Gomu no Bajrang Gun (Gum-Gum Bajrang Gun) strike, he has put the weapons and haki of a conqueror. Luffy’s hand could grow to the size of Onigashima Island.
● With the attack by the Gomu Gomu no Fusen (Gum-Gum Balloon), Luffy inflates himself like a balloon.
● Luffy’s hand may pierce an opponent’s abdomen like a rocket with his Gomu Gomu no Dawn Rocket (Gum-Gum Dawn Rocket) technique.
● Like a whip, Luffy may extend his leg to deliver a twisted kick with his “Gum-Gum Dawn Whip” (Gomu Gomu no Dawn Whip).
● Gear 5’s Gomu Gomu no Mogura Pistol (Gum-Gum Mole Pistol) has a tentacle-like arm that comes out of the ground and attacks an opponent from behind as Luffy punches the ground with his hand.
